Plotterkill hiker
gets carried out

ROTTERDAM — Area firefighters spent nearly three hours pulling a hiker from the base of an embankment in the Plotterkill Nature Preserve Tuesday.
Plotterkill Fire Chief John Tobiassen said a 58-year-old man had walked down a roughly 100-foot embankment near the second falls area, but was unable to hike back up due to ground conditions. He said the man had been stuck in the area for about an hour before he was able to alert another hiker of his situation.
Nearly four dozen firefighters from five area companies responded because rescuers were initially unsure if the man was injured. Tobiassen said the man sustained some minor cuts and crews were able to lift him to safety after about two hours.
Tobiassen said the trail remains muddy and is even still icy in some areas.
