Different style for neighborhood
Marv Cermak

That brand-new Paul Mitchell Beauty School in downtown Schenectady is expected to open by mid-April. Building renovations are advancing and state licensing requirements are being processed, according to school officials.

The Paul Mitchell arrival in town is a lifesaver of sorts because the long drawn-out Big House nightclub project bombed before a single cocktail could be served.

The Paul Mitchell School is expected to bring about 250 students, staff and customers daily to the facility, which will include a beauty-products retail outlet.

The incoming business is making its first public splash as hosts of a Funraiser Fashion Show March 31 at Proctors GE Theatre. The program will include comedian Greg Aidala, a silent auction and musical entertainment.

There is a $30 admission charge. Paul Mitchell officials said all proceeds will go to charitable organizations..........>>>>.........>>>>............Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/AspS.....Page=2#ixzz0iKOt0pTI

A thing of beauty
Marv Cermak

Hey, from the start more than a year ago, I've mentioned here inside info about a new Paul Mitchell Beauty School coming to downtown Schenectady. Latest reports are the business will open at the end of this week for product sale and student enrollment.

I got a sidewalk look the other night at the high-intensity lighted interior of the place located in the Proctors block. It's without a doubt the most modern, upscale looking operation in downtown.

It's loaded with state-of-the-art stainless steel fixtures, mirrors, lighting, teaching video the works.

Paul Mitchell is kind of a rescue undertaking. It reversed the abject failure of a building project highly touted as the Big House nightclub. The school/store will be a two-floor operation, but insiders say ultimately hopes are to use of all four building floors.

Paul Mitchell is as about as big a name as there is internationally when it comes to hair styling. The school, only the second in New York, will bring a couple hundred students and staff downtown daily.

Impressive, but I'm still guarded about feeling TOO excited about this. The property has eaten a LOT of taxpayer $$, but MAYBE Paul Mitchell can turn it around

How long will the beauty school stay in business and will the taxpayer ever see any return on their money?

Over a million County taxpayer dollars were dumped into this Big Hose fiasco. We will never be paid back. No one was ever fired or held accountable. This is another attempt by the MSM to make it look better.

Another Metrograft flop that will do nothing to improve sales tax revenue, create jobs or stabilize property values that are in free fall because of crushing taxes. BTW, there were 2 beauty colleges Downtown for decades. They both closed shop.

Well, I'd hardly call Marv Cermak "MSM" ... and the bottom line is, yes, Metroplex SHOULD be ashamed of themselves, there should be resignations (or at least NOT contract renewals with individuals involved in this and other fiascos in the city) - BUT .. that being said, we need to move forward with development and make sure that kind of BS doesn't happen again.

I still strongly believe RG should be replaced, and hopefully, when Savages term is over, she'll be replaced by someone with the cajones to do just that. We can't fix the past, but we can work to make sure crap like this doesn't happen again.

No, I'm not becoming a cheerleader for them, in any way shape or form - I'm just looking at reality.

They MUST start working on something outside the miracle 3 block radius of Proctors, they MUST stop pouring cash into that "non-profit" hole, they need to abandon the effort to make Erie Blvd a "walkway" (which, I hear is coming back on the table this summer) and they MUST start showing taxpayers some of the "relief" they promised from sales tax revenue ... if they don't - VOTE them out in November. (oh, and start with Buchanan)

Unless this place pulls people from outside schenectady, I don't see it being around for too long. Don't get me wrong, I do hope they succeed. Really!

But first who, in schenectady can afford to go there when most residents are hanging out at the dss building or out of work?

Second, there are beauty shops just about on every street corner that sells Paul Mitchell products. Hell, my wife says she can by them at Rite Aid.

Time will tell....

"When Savage's term is over?"-she just won another 4 years over unknown REP opponents. She is chewing on running for State Senate or Assembly. The sheeple have finally awoken that we need private retail downtown not more governmental gin mills and must concentrate beyond 2 blocks around Proctor's.

The answer to too much socialism is never more socialism. Government needs to tax less, stop giveaways to nonprofits, stop wasting millions on curbs and planters. The current Metrograft "plan" is not sustainable. The same few hogs keep feasting on governmental largess. No job creation, no increase in sales tax revenues and more crushing taxes.

It's just a matter of time when until Gillen's wave crashes. He is on a downswing. How many Press Conferences has he had lately? He will be out when he is no longer valuable to the dems, which in my guess 2 years! People are fed up with this high priced false hope called downtown that have drained all of the community's financial resources while everything is falling down around it.

Has Death Ray entered the witness protection program Source? Judging from the growing, militant group at City Council meetings all denouncing the millions dumped into 2 blocks around Proctor's, while every other neighborhood is in free fall, his 15 minutes are just about over.

Here's a story I just heard about the alleged "renaissance". A lady was in the Stockade for a wedding. She forget her formal shoes and asked if there was any shoe stores Downtown? The answer: There no stores for anything Downtown. The local took her to Rotterdam Square Mall to find her new shoes. But don't fret-a credit union and beauty college will soon open up. Keep looking for new shoes elsewhere.
