Most restaurants serve "Americanized" versions of ethnic food -- even the so-called Italian restaurants.  Of course, one can argue that what we think is Italian food was actually created outside Italy.   For example -- It is a fact that Veal, Chicken and Eggplant Parmigiana were "created" by an American living in Great Britain.  Pizza as we know it was really "created" in the U.S. -- Chicago and New York.  The tomato isn't even Italian -- it came from the Americas .. brought back by Christopher Columbus in the 1490's/early 1500's.   In fact, Julius Caesar nor any of the Roman Emperors had a favorite tomato sauce recipe -- despite the claims of Lydia Bastianich or Giada or Rachel Ray.  If they ever actually cracked a book and studied history, they would know better.

Finally - getting back to the actual topic - those Federal tax dollars would have been spent in another comunity .. instead they were spent HERE in our community.  Our tax dollars made an improvement in OUR community.  The project has acted and will act as a catalyst for other projects (private and public) that will improve OUR community.

Bumble, there is another issue with not paying taxes.   Initially I kind of liked your comments that all homeowners stop paying taxes, it could make a statement.

But I can see McTHIEF on the news explaining that the city will borrow as needed because the city will be able to borrow at a lower interest rate lower than the interest the city charges homeowners when they don't pay their taxes.

Everyone outside the city will be laughing when the mayor calmly says to the news media, "this is not a problem, we will get through our financial obligations by borrowing.   Those who fail to pay their taxes will pay dearly because of the interest rate on delinquent taxes so it will be no loss to the city.   Homeowners will be the ones that will come out the losers in this scheme.  Homeowners are not willing to throw away and cannot afford to throw away the equity in their homes.  When the 11th hour comes, they will pay not just their taxes but the hefty interest on delinquent taxes.  Further, as the taxes are not paid, they will no be able to deduct the taxes for federal and state tax filing.  And once they do pay, the hefty interest penalty they will pay is not deductible when filing federal and state taxes."



Really bumble?   Would you be one of the 75% to not pay taxes, risk losing your house or pay a hefty interest penalty?  


Can you see it on the news when the reporters first break the story.   So many would say "wow, those people have a great idea."


But tell me bumble, when the mayor says they city can borrow money to pay the bills and then the homeowners participating in the "scheme" will pay the hefty interest, well, who will have the last laugh?   The city that merely borrowed money for a short time?   Or the homeowners who pay thousands of dollars in interest on top of the principal amount of the tax bill?

I kind of understand what you are trying to say, and yes, there will be an initial shock value, just one interview with the mayor saying the city can borrow at a lower interest rate than the interest charged on taxes, and that the interest charged to homeowners will cause the homeowners worse financial problems, the public will look at the homeowners and laugh.   The mayor will come out looking like a god.

Hey bumble, again, while it seems like a good idea for shock value, could you explain how homeowners can go without paying taxes when most have mortgages that mandate taxes be escrowed and the bank pays the taxes?   They simply cannot call the bank, so many have FHA mortgages in the city, and tell the bank not to pay the taxes.


Think it through before making a suggestion.

Yes I believe fees are escrowed in the city as well.  

In Rotterdam, we pay separate for the fee, it is not part of the tax bil.


The fees in the city are part of the tax bill.  The city doesn't issue separate bills for the water fee, the sewer fee, or the trash fee.   And in fact while most municipalities have annual bills, Schenectady is weird in that they do quarterly installments.  And while not 100% certain, I think the banks made the payments quarterly which I kind of think is odd as it means extra work for the banks.  The city and school district issue one bill for four quarterly payments.   They do not send bills out four times a year, homeowners and banks have to keep track of payments themselves.  

In fact, it just dawned on me, we know a family who has an FHA mortgage, taxes of course are escrowed, and the bank sends the payments quarterly.  Last year they grieved their assessment, of course, Gary's gal Mary Mary (her hubby and her have not paid their taxes in three years) was one of the assessment board members who was on the panel when they grieved and of course she said NO  to their grievance, they have a house between the hill and "the Mont" (no, not on 890), just that area, the city had it assessed for $90,000 and when they went to Small Claims review, they got their assessment down to just shy of $50,000 (see, McThief obviously told Mary Mary and the rest of the board not to reduce any houses).  But I remembered them calling us because the city told them the overage they are paying for the taxes (after the taxes wee reduced) was between them and their bank while the bank told them it's between them and the city.   But once the assessment was set they waited til forever to get the refund from the bank.  If I remember, the small claims hearing was in August, for the school district to issue a revised bill because what their bank had paid in the schools' first payment took care of the 2nd and 3rd quarterly payment, but they waited so long. Naturally the city and county tax bills don't get affected by a revised assessment til January.   Gee, I'll have to give them a call, I think what they were saying last year is that their escrow analysis is done in November but I vaguely remember them being concerned about that because if the escrow analysis in Nov 2013 didn't update to reflect the taxes they are going to be in a position where their escrow really won't go down to the correct amount til Nov 2015.  Those analyses "last years escrow" needs to project "next year' escrow" needs.
