Rotterdam mall needs to clean up its act
S.E. KARPINSKI M.J. KARPINSKI
Mayfield

Recently my husband and I went shopping at the Rotterdam Square Mall. To our dismay, our first impression was that they moved the Rotterdam dump to the mall!
We could not believe how unkempt the grounds were. Littered throughout the parking lot and outside the door, next to T.J. Maxx, were empty boxes and bottles, etc., strewn all over the area. What happened to the nice landscaping? In front of the stores, instead of nice flowers and shrubs, we were greeted with weeds and clutter. We cannot believe that the stores’ management would accept this with the high cost of rentals.
Now we can understand that around noontime there were only a handful of people shopping. We will probably not return there.

Too bad the Karpinski's didn't take a little more of a ride around Rotterdam they would have had a lot more to write about as there's garbage, weeds, and clutter all over this town that needs to be cleaned up.

In my opinion, the mall management has not done a good job in maintaining the appearance of the property or providing adequate security.  I have visited the mall several times on Friday nights and found there to be groups of unsupervised teenagers whose presence was loud and unruly.  Security was no where to be seen.  The vast majority of these young people carried no bags as evidence that they were at the mall to shop.

Don't misinterpret my statements as suggesting that the teenagers don't have a right to shop at the mall.  As a parent of two teenagers, I believe that they should be permitted to shop at the mall and to go to the movie theatre, restaurants, etc. just as are adults.  However, the misbehavior exhibited by some ruins it for others.  I do not care to hear the profanity, to witness the extreme public displays of affection, or to see the aggressive physical behvior that some of the undisciplined youth exhibit.

It is the mall managements responsibility to guarantee a safe and pleasant environment for the public and the merchants to conduct business.  I would suggest that the management begin by assigning a greater security presence on Friday and Saturday evenings/nights.

In the end, those who find the mall unappealing will vote with their feet and their money (as I have frequently done)

The mall is owned by a company out of Arizona. There maintanence company is called Service Solutions. I have no complaints about the maintanence, but I will say that the mall has somehow lost it's charm. The food court, without the carousel, reminds me of nothing more than a big soup kitchen. I usually shop at Mohawk Commons, but when I do venture down to Rotterdam Sprawl Mall, I wonder how these stores can afford to stay open. There is never really anybody there.
