Bill offers voters a way to put action in dissatisfaction: force a new election
July 19, 2007
Massachusetts voters sick of holding their noses on Election Day could get another option: none of the above.
The proposal would let voters reject all candidates and demand a new election.
"Occasionally, when you get an application for a position, none of them are qualified," said William H. White , a retired systems analyst from East Dennis spearheading the scheme, who testified yesterday before state lawmakers.
The measure, pending before the Legislature, would add the line "None of the Above; For a New Election" to every state and local race on the ballot. If that option won the most votes, another election would be held in 60 to 80 days, and other candidates would be allowed to run.
In a state where 70 percent of candidates ran unopposed last year, the bill would let voters try to force competition by calling for a new election.
The bill was sponsored at White's behest by Senator Robert A. O'Leary , a Barnstable Democrat, and Representative Cleon H. Turner , who represents Dennis. Turner said yesterday that the novel idea has gained little traction so far on Beacon Hill.
The bill's approval would make Massachusetts the first state to offer voters such a choice that is binding. Nevada has given its voters a nonbinding none-of-the-above option in statewide races since 1975.
Under White's proposal, the presidential race would be the only one in which voters could not demand a new election. But they could register their discontent by voting for none-of-the-above, as well as a candidate.
"That would signal that this candidate would not have a mandate, even if they won," said White.

I think we could use that option in NYS as well.

I LOVE THIS!!! Why can't we have it here. Gee...perhaps Mr. Kosiur would consider proposing this law. Perhaps that would get him elected since his campaign seems to be going in the crapper!

There are some very good people that would be very good in a politcal position but are not endorsed by a party. This would be a good chance for them to be elected. It may be the only way that some of these folks would get elected.

If you don't go along with what the partys want you'll never be endorsed. You're not allowed to do what's right only to do what the party wants.

And who says the person has to be endorsed by a party? If the majority chose 'non of the above' than it would be clear to the main politiical parties 'who' the voters wanted. And if in fact it was a non-party affiliate....they could be on the ballot the second time around. I think this would be the only way to give the 'non-party' candidates a level playing field. Cause let's face it...there are many people out there, with or without major party affiliation who could clearly do a better job than some of these local politicians are doing today. Schenectady is a prime example of that.

I think we would all be in a voting line forever---like every month.......between school budgets being redone, primaries, special elections, presidential etc etc........if only Hollywood, the media, the colleges would take their heads out of their a@*&%, be straight forward and not self serving with all their polls and just shut up.....

I did receive the call of an "0fficial Poll"....

they asked"what would you consider the most important problem that needs to be addressed in NYS",,,then they gave me some choices--I chose revitalize the economy.

They then asked me which candidate I think would accomplish this.

MY REPLY:

THAT IS PRIVATE INFORMATION.

they said thank you and hung up.......

As the voting public we need to stop "tipping our hand"......the vote is the first and last say.......if you are running for office hopefully you already 'see' what needs to be done.........folks they take our words flip them around and spew them back at us in the form of "polls",,,scientific polls.........that is the funniest thing I have ever heard.......

The polls are so the political parties can see how their candidate is doing compared to the opponent and if their guy is behind they'll hit us with more commercials and fliers in the mail.

I believe that there needs to be some kind of reform to the voting process. I know some folks that are not in politics but would be a better politician than the real politicians. I see both parties as becoming too powerful and corrupt. America won't have to wait for terrorist to distroy us if the politicians keep on going the way they are now.

Tony I agree, I don't think that either party has done very much for their supporters  Whether Rep or Dem when elected to office they forget who put them there and why they were elected in the first place.
