Graffiti pops up all over including real hard-to-reach spots. The latest example of remote locations is atop the former State Theater building in downtown Schenectady.
The "art" is an attention grabber because it's high above the old movie house marquee, well read because it carries various community and personal messages.
The graffiti is unintelligible. Some cops I spoke with said much of the scribble is believed to be gang insignias. They said the markings stake out territory of various gangs.
Building owner John Matarazzo rents out the signboard to businesses, assorted organizations and individuals. He said two fire escapes are the only routes the invaders could have used to reach the roof.
"Hanging over the roof edge without a safety harness is not wise," Matarazzo said. He agreed when I said if you offered these guys money to paint the section they desecrated they no doubt wouldn't be interested in a job.
"One of these days I might find one of these artists flat out on the sidewalk," he said.

Council attempting to stop graffiti SCHENECTADY — Have ideas about fighting graffi ti? The Schenectady City Council wants to know. The council will hold a public hearing on Monday at 6 p.m. at City Hall on a proposed age limit for purchasing spray paint and wide-tipped permanent markers. Council members have also said they may create a comprehensive graffiti-fighting program, which could include murals and a rapidresponse cleanup crew.
It should be up to the city to clean up the graffiti. Then perhaps they would see how the city is taking 'pride' in the appearence of the place anad the rest will follow. Ya know...lead by example! JUST CLEAN IT UP! Rotterdam did!

Unfortunately its up to the property owner. In the case of graffiti on our statues in and around the city, its up to the city. Or on city owned property.
Barbara is an embarrassment. It's unfortunate. I'm still flabbergasted as to how she got elected in the first place. Oh well, that's our Democratic Dictatorship for you. And it's spread to the county so like it or not, Rotterdamians are affected too.

Shop owners and graffiti artists could face $1,000 fines, a year in jail or both and property owners fines of $10 per day for violating the city’s proposed anti-graffiti ordinance. The City Council could approve the law in two weeks. The ordinance would allow police to charge people with a Class A misdemeanor if they paint graffi ti on any building in the city, sell aerosol spray paint or permanent markers to minors, or allow such items to be stolen from their store. The ordinance further allows the city to levy a fine of $10 per day on property owners who do not remove graffiti from their property after receiving written notice. The city may also step in under the ordinance and clean up the graffi ti and then charge the cost back to the property owner, or file a lien against the property. The law’s sponsor, Councilwoman Barbara Blanchard, said the ordinance “is part of the solution” to controlling graffiti in the city. “We will take more steps. We have to get rid of graffiti as soon as it occurs,” she said. Asked how big the problem of graffiti is in the city, she answered: “I see it in the neighborhoods. No one wants to see it.” Councilman Joseph Allen and Mayor Brian U. Stratton said they support the ordinance, as did several speakers at Monday night’s City Council meeting. “It’s an ongoing problem,” Allen said. “This is absolutely necessary. It’s costing the city, homeowners and business owners money.” Stratton said, “Anything we can do to fight this scourge is worth trying.” Fred Lee, president of Schenectady United Neighborhoods, urged the City Council to approve the ordinance. “As residents of Hamilton Hill, we look at this almost every day.” Chuck Thorne of the nonprofi t arts group 440 State Street offered another option to the city: a community mural program. “In cities that have done it, it has dramatically reduced graffiti,” he said. A community mural program allows graffiti “artists” to create murals on designated properties. “A mural wall is respected. Taggers go after bare walls,” Thorne said. The 440 State Street group plans to begin its community mural program next year, using local, private and public grants to assist with start-up costs. Lee criticized the community mural program, saying “it sends the wrong message to people.”
Take away their title of "Taggers" and call them something else......like: ignorant, jerk, uneducated, selfish, etc etc.....I'm sure there are plenty of names,,,other than a nice PC word.......

That Barbara woman has one big screw loose to come up with such hair brained ideas. Getting rid of graffiti is admirable, but suggesting that a law to prevent "kids" from buying the paint and markers is the most stupid think someone could come up with.
Just how is this suggested legislation going to stop it?

Now march yourselves into the city council meeting and tell that Barbara that there is Hannaford, Walmart, CVS, Eckerd, and dollar store just feet from the city boundary. If the kids want these items, they probably have a time trying to find a store that sells them. Well, Price Chopper on Eastern, and of course there's the CVS's, Rite Aides, and Eckerds'.
But depending on where they live there are the businesses on Altamont Ave, there's Mohawk Commons, there's the bridge to Scotia, and a $1.00 bus to Rotterdam's businesses off 890 by the mall.
So go ask Barbara what is her idea now. She's a councilman for the city, no say, no city laws will rule businesses in the towns
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
