REMS are no longer non profit and therefore shouldn't be getting any special treatment by any government agency period. That issue was settled when the tax district was rejected.

The COUNTY could back door them in and make them a 'countywide' non-profit ambulance service.
And the 'taxpayers' would have no say in the matter.
The county leg HAS GOT TO BE abolished!

If the county should do this with the economy here in it's present condition it would be like creating another entitlement that the taxpayer would have to support. I believe there are rules that have to be followed before the county could do this and it involves the public and their support or lack there of. In light of the tax district vote that was rejected it would be unwise for the county to even consider doing that.

Man...who says the company can't hard-bill and still remain not-for-profit. Are you reading these words?!? NOT FOR PROFIT. Their goal, as an organization, isn't to MAKE money, rather...to break even.

Take for instance the Duanseburg Community Center. You need to pay for a membership there. They won't just give it to you. And if you DON'T pay, don't expect to go swimming in their pool or using their basketball courts. Now by what I'm reading here, this organization MUST be a for-profit right? Come on. Use your brains.

If they still think that they can remain a non profit and still pay the massive bills that they run up then REMS is dreaming. They are going to have to become profitable or go out of business, no free lunch, pay their bills, buy their own equipment, and pay their salaried members. That's the real difference between Mohawk and REMS one is profitable and one isn't. As far as I'm concerned being allowed to buy cheap gas is an unfair advantage to any other ambulance service that wishes to bid on the contract.

That's right Shadow !

Did anyone happen to see the article in the Gazette today about the Broadalbin volunteer ambulance service?? The Supervisor
there is withholding the annual $12,000 funding from the Town for their volunteer ems squad because he questions the legality
of billing users while receiving municipal funding. The President of that squad argues that it is not part of a service contract, but
rather a stipend to contribute to their costs...about which she says, "Emergency medicine is not a cheap field. It's a business,
and it's expensive to run an ambulance service."

I just posted this with the agenda meeting business today and thought I should put this portion on this thread:

Mohawk Ambulance was there to make their case...including Jim M. himself...who reiterated the proposal for ems...with no tax or fuel subsidies.

The Board asked very few questions.

In the course of asking what percentage of ALS collection would be retained as fee for billing, collection
and reimbursement (8% - REMS wants 10% and never mind that they have been illegally keeping 100% for years) Godlewski tried to get them to
disclose their income...Jim McP rightfully declined...frankly it's none of his business...and it has nothing to do with their ability to service the Town.

Wayne Calder wanted to know if they would establish a base in Rotterdam...Mohawk confirmed their longstanding committment to purchase
the Town-owned building next to the PD. Then Calder wanted to know what they would do if the Town refused to sell (why would they do that
Wayne!)...Mohawk replied that they would simply establish a base elsewhere in the Town. And, if you can believe this, Liccardi asks them if
this is what Mohawk meant by the statement on the handouts dispersed that said they would be a tax paying service provider...what a brilliant
question from the very short attorney!

Matt Martin asked about response times...would back-ups meet the same response time standards? Yes...when an ambulance is dispatched to
a call, another is dispatched to the Town to cover while the first is tied up. It was also explained that other ambulances will be in the area, in addition
to the in-house ambulance.

DiLeva didn't ask any questions because she gets it and always did...she already knows the proposal inside and out. She is, by the way, the only
Board Member who responded to an invitation from Mohawk Ambulance to meet with them to discuss their proposal...which she did...which is why
she had no stupid questions for them today....unlike Bob G., Liccardi and Calder...FDG just watched it all go by.

OMG!!!

Rotterdamians must be so embarrassed with their 'dumb and dumber' town board. I would have just walked out shaking my head!! I thought I'd spit out my after dinner adult drink just reading the recap!
Thanks for the update gadfly!!
