There can be developement there but it sure doesn't sound like sustainable for the folks living there.....alot of folks like to live "in the wild".....I do....
but the convenience's will cost.....coldbrook for instance could stand to have sewers for growth....why?...because we can.....we should do it now before the
neighborhoods get a 'burnout feel' of old nothingness.....the Junction has it's own patina that can be expanded upon...whether or not it would
help with taxes in a big way is another question because of the restrictions.......as for the water tank.....ya'll should take it and it will be yours.....dont
let a beechnut happen to you......

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

I admit to not being totally "up" on the water tank issue.  I know there seems to be some
difference of opinion on whether a new tank was needed or whether the old one could have
been fixed.   I am not sure whether the residents of the water district had much say in the
new tank being built.    What is this about the new tank not working ?

The water tank has not been able to fully supply the needs of the people of Rotterdam Junction.  The pumps on the current tank are consistently running, due to the fact that the daily amount of use in the Junction is greater than the amount that the tank actually holds.  Also, there is a question on the age of the tank, which would at least need repair, but they were looking into a new one, which was expandable, as needed, in case the need for water continued to grow in the Junction.  The several meetings that have been held out at the Rotterdam Junction Fire Department have always brought this up as a hot topic over the past couple of years.  Also, there had been constant questions on the location and cost of the new tank and what would be appropriate.

That is not in the "most sensitive" area.  The "most sensitive" area is closest to the town's well
heads which are behind the Knotty Pine.

The whole aquifer is a sensitive area because if you contaminate the area around the aquifer it will leach into the ground and pollute into the whole water supply. There are already minute traces of MTBE in some areas from the gas tanks near the old Navy Depot in Scotia. As the State regulations require, we routinely test your drinking water for numerous
contaminants. These groups of contaminants followed by the number of
contaminants in each group exist at levels that were NOT DETECTABLE (Water
District #5) in your drinking water volatile organic compounds (52) + MTBE,
synthetic organic compounds (3, asbestos, color, odor, radiological chemicals (2).
Inorganic contaminants that were NOT DETECTABLE are: arsenic, barium
cadmium, chromium, mercury, manganese, selenium, silver, fluoride, antimony,
beryllium, thallium and cyanide.
DO I NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS? Although our drinking water met or
exceeded state and federal regulations, some people may be more vulnerable to
disease causing microorganisms or pathogens in drinking water than the general
population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing
chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with
HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be
particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking
water from their health care provider about their drinking water. EPA/CDC
guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium,
Giardia and other microbiological pathogens are available from the Safe Drinking
Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Again -- as stated previously -- we are speaking about different things with the same term.

Yes -- the whole Aquifer Recharge area is sensitive (which is the area from Rotterdam down
the river past Niskayuna)  ...
but I am speaking specifically about a map showing only the area closest to Rotterdam Jct's
well heads --- the area closest to the well heads is most sensitive,  then the "sensitivity" drops
off  .. 2nd zone, 3rd zone, 4th zone .. as youmove away from the actual well heads.
This map is in relation to what areas CAN and CAN NOT be developed.   Existing businesses
in the 4 zones are "grandfathered" in .. but new businesses or even residential construction
would be greatly limited or, quite possibly, impossible  -- because of the proximity to the
town's well heads   NOT because of the proximity to the Aquifer Recharge area.

The aquifer actually starts above rte 103  and parallels the river on both sides and the recharge area is even bigger. It's a politically sensitive area that you speak of that will allow development over the aquifer but once an accident occurs and the water supply is contaminated it will be too late for our water supply.  http://www.schenectadycounty.com/FullStory.aspx?m=143&amid=562

I know where the aquifer recharge area is .. AGAIN .. I am not talking about that area .. only
talking about the "sensitive area"  around the town's well heads

Right now -- the area around the town wells -- can not be built on or developed at ALL --

as an example -- there is an old church on Route 5S .. for sale for a while .. I inquired about
buying it to open a gift shop/deli --- because it is in the "sensitive area" around the town's well
heads   (NOT because of the aquifer)  .. it would be impossible to get a permit to open it as
a gift shop/ deli.

My only point is that what happens over that aquifer area whether near the well heads or not can destroy our water supply.

technically .. under the new rules .. most of Rotterdam JCT could not even be built TODAY

but since it is there .. we should try to have reasonable development

As long as there are precautions taken to protect the aquifer then certain types of development should be considered. If the restrictions in the early 50's were the same as today SI would not be allowed to build over the aquifer as that is one company that can do some damage to the water supply.

Oh it will rot.....

It will ge an uninhabital sign and stay that way forever as the town is toooo afraid to demolish unsafe buildings that children could gain entrance abd hurt them selves

We'd rater pay the likes of bbl and larned via metroplex money than save some cash and use town employees who are qualified
