And a tax write off along with their butt buddy Rangel. It must be nice to worship Gaia and be a liberal like LArned and all the the Democrat-liberal-Conservatives. Even Peter G won't save them at the end of time.

County unanimously passes purchase of land for little league

Sean Ahern 03/10/10

The Schenectady County Legislature unanimously approved resolution for the purchase of real estate in the town of Rotterdam to be used for baseball fields in relation to the Rotterdam Little League, with local residents volunteering to pitch in on the construction.

The cost of the 8.7 acres of property is $260,000, located at 544 Burdeck St., and will be retained by the county as parkland, with the little league leasing the property and will have the responsibility of construction of fields and buildings, according to information from the county. Introduced by Legislature Judith Dagostino, D-Rotterdam, the purchase of the land will create a new tax base, have key road implications, the intersection at Burdeck and Thompson will be fixed by the developer with no cost to the county and will create new green space within the community.

"Its a long project but its a good use," said Dagostino. "It gives the little league a permanent home."

Local residents of the town of Rotterdam, including Democratic Town Supervisor Frank Del Gallo, came out in support of the legislation, with Del Gallo volunteering the use of his own heavy machinery in the development of the park. Legislators Angelo Santabarbara, D-Rotterdam, and Holly Vellano, C-Rotterdam, supported the addition of the new home for the Rotterdam Little League and the purchase of the property in Rotterdam.

"“While the times have certainly changed some things have
stayed the same. Little league baseball is one of them. As a sport little league baseball really helps the children that take part grow and learn to be a part of something larger”, said Santabarbara in a statement.

The Rotterdam Little League needs a new location as the owner of the current site plans to develop the property into a 248 unit apartment complex, according to information from the county. The purchase of the property also comes at a significant decrease in cost from the owner, with the appraised value at $600,000. The difference in value will be donated to the county by the current owner.

“I am pleased that the County Legislature is able to step forward and use this funding to secure a new home for the Rotterdam Little League,” said Dagostino in a March 10 release. “Hundreds of Rotterdam youth will benefit every year from this investment in our future.”

It's going to cost quite a few bucks to develop the new location with 3 fences to buy and install, concession stand to build with deep footings for support, and places to park cars. There also should be a camera and alarm system or vandalism will be expensive and often.

I wonder if the Little League will have the OK to panhandle out in front of all the apartmenrt buildings once they're built.  Maybe a portion of their rent should be donated to the Little League for a set period of time...or maybe Ms. Dagostino would like to donate her Legislator pay to the league.

ROTTERDAM
Baseball league finds new home
Community helps provide place for disabled players

BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter

Challengers commissioner Richard Dickershaid will retire from managing the baseball league for developmentally disabled youths and adults at the end of this season, content in the knowledge that he has finally found a permanent home for his players.
“This will be our home base,” Dickershaid, 72, said Thursday from the playing fields at Woestina Park in Rotterdam Junction. “This is my year. I did what I wanted to do. I want to sit back now and enjoy it.”
What he did was secure an agreement with the town of Rotterdam to lease Woestina Park for $1 a year for use by his league. The league, consisting of approximately 135 people ages 6 to 65 on 10 teams, will use the park’s three diamonds Monday through Thursday and on Fridays in the event of rain during the week. The Rotterdam Little League will have use of the fields on weekends, when typically the Challengers don’t play. The park will also be open to town residents.
The Challenger Tri-County Baseball League is spending approximately $50,000 to upgrade the fields before opening day. The season opens May 2, with the league playing through June.
“This has taken a long time and a lot of work by a lot of people to get here,” Dickershaid said.
T h e l e a g u e plans to resod the three fields and put in a sprinkler system for one field. It also plans to regrade and lay stone in the parking lot and paint the concession stand and dugouts. The playing fields and bathrooms will be made handicapped accessible.
Dickershaid said that the $50,000 is the accumulation of years of donations and fundraisers and that he plans to spend all of it, if necessary, to fix up the park. “The $50,000 was made to do this project,” he said. “The kids are looking forward to this.”
The league had been leasing private land off of Route 7 to play games, paying the owner $800 per year, plus the cost to maintain the field. The property is considered prime for development, and the Challengers were worried they would lose the site at some point.
Dickershaid has already turned over presidency of the league to Ellen Brown of Pattersonville. Brown’s daughter, Helen Claus, has played in the league for 13 years; she is now 27.
Before becoming president, Brown was a longtime coach and league supporter.
“I stepped up because Dick wanted to step down. He approached me and asked if I wanted to be president,” she said. “I enjoy being with the kids and have always been involved as a volunteer.”
Dickershaid said the league has survived for more than two decades through the generosity of the community.
“This program is owned by people in the community. To me, the only thing I have done here was to find people with compassion to support the program,” he said. “It was not hard to take the kids from one side of the fence [separating spectators from players] to the other side of the fence.”
Dickershaid credited St. George’s Lodge No. 6 of the Masons for giving the league $5,000 annually to cover operating costs, the Rotterdam Junction Volunteer Fire Department for its offer to grade the parking lot and Rotterdam Opportunities for Youths for offering to paint the buildings, plus countless other community groups.
He also credited the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office for its new inmate work program. On Thursday, five inmates from the Schenectady County Correctional Facility spent hours clearing dead leaves and brush from hills surrounding the park. The material serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. .............>>>>..............>>>>................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01101&AppName=1

Home-field advantage
By SEAN AHERN 04/30/10

Over the past five weeks, Richard “Dick” Dickershaid has been renovating three baseball fields in Woestina Park in time for opening weekend for the Challenger Baseball League.
“I think it’s going to be a beautiful park,” said Dickershaid. “I think it’ll look like Yankee Stadium when they’re done.”
With renovations to the baseball diamonds in Rotterdam Junction almost complete, the Challenger Baseball League will soon have its own home field, with an opening day of Sunday, May 2, quickly approaching. The league, which is made up of children and adults with developmental disabilities, has grown with the addition of players 5 to 75 years old. The free program, which has been around for more than 21 years, is maintained by Dickershaid and his wife, Margie, who see more than 100 players running the bases four nights a week in 10 different ball clubs.
In October 2009, Steve Tommasone, former Rotterdam town supervisor, announced the permanent home for the Rotterdam Challengers Baseball League at the Rotterdam Junction park, which was formerly used by the Rotterdam Little League. Since then, the park has been refurbished using donations from the community and $50,000 that has been saved up by the league over the past 18 years, according to Dickershaid................>>>>................>>>>..............http://www.spotlightnews.com/news/view_news.php?news_id=1272633848

He fixed up the whole neglected and disused field with private donations he had collected over the years, without taxpayer money and he STILL wants the neighborhood kids to use the fields since they are PUBLIC PROPERTY (which to those in the cheering section means they are owned by all the people.)
