The ice cream at Dutchers was homemade and you're right the cones were huge. When I was young and my parents would stop there for ice cream I could only get a single dip as the double dips were way too big for me to eat.
My parents would take us to Dutchers on Sundays. I always remember the line being soooo long. And it was usually so hot out. And we didn't have A/C in our cars "back then". I would always get a single dip black raspberry or orange/pineapple cone. I am your basic chocolate lover, but for some reason they were my favorites at Dutchers.
I remember hearing a loud CRACK the night Palma's was stuck by lightning and burnt. I was just a kid back then and wasn't feeling well. We had to get special permission to leave our home the next morning because of all the fire trucks on our street, so my parents could take me to the doctors. Where they found that I had rheumatic fever and had to be hospitalized.
Same night of the tornado, and lighting from the storm hit the lumber company. We saw the flames on Helderberg ave
I don't think the tornado was on that night. I think there was about a 5-6 year span between both events. Well, that is if I am remembering this correctly!
I stand corrected....tornado was June 24 1960 @ 5:30pm. It may have sparked a fire at the lumber company, but not the one being referred to. But another thing I think is correct is that the night of the Tornado was the same night as the prom at Mohon.
JUST BECAUSE SISSY SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO...BUT HE THINKS IT DOES!!!!! JUST BECAUSE MC1 SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO!!!!!

It was the night of Mohon's senior ball. My brother was suppose to go that night.
Look for a story in the newspaper about this tomorrow. I have been corresponding with Justin Mason over the last couple of days regarding this. You get the news here first.
Here's the correspondence back and forth with him.

Go right ahead. It's no problem at all. Like I said, I'll probably write about it for tomorrow's paper, but it's not really a scoop or anything.
