I predict that this beast will be standing for quite some time.

I recall that there was funding provided by the state or federal government last year to Schenectady County and surrounding counties for purposes that included environmental cleanup (brownfields). Despite known environmental issues at various locations throughout the county, I believe that our county leaders applied the funds to the Center City project. I will try to locate the article pertaining to this funding in the forum archives and post a link to this thread. |

Town officials had sought grant funding for the project through the Restore NY Communities Initiative, a state program designed to aid municipalities in rehabilitating or removing obsolete or rundown commercial and residential properties. But Rotterdam was not among the communities awarded funds during a second round of grants issued in January.

Not surprised. I am sure most people thought that when John Paolino ( our last Democrat supervisor who pledged to work full time but then didn't because the city wanted him to work there while he collected his huge pension) made that deal with Golub, things would be hunk dorey in fact. |

Justin Mason supplied me with the following information regarding the cleanup needed on this property via e-mail...

Also, here's some further information on the contamination. DEC got back to me after the article was filed, so it never made it in. However, you can find it all online at the DEC's "Environmental Site Remediation Database Search." Here's an excerpt that discusses the site, which is called "Don's laundry."
"Don's Laundry was a 0.5 acre dry cleaning store and laundromat that was located in an old shopping center that is now mostly vacant. The shopping center is located in a residential/ commercial area on Curry Road in the Town of Rotterdam. The business began at this location in the mid 1960s and closed in the early 1990s. Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) was used in the dry cleaning process. Groundwater contamination resulted from PCE spills and/or accidental discharges over time. The original owner completed an Interim Remedial Measure (IRM) consisting of shallow soil removal. The owner also installed several monitoring wells in order to better define the groundwater plume. A groundwater pump and treat (p&t) system was installed in January 1996. A Voluntary Agreement was executed in May 1996 with Golub Corp and Clark Trading Corp. A ROD was signed in March 1997 requiring continued OM&M of the groundwater p&t system. In May 1999 operation of the groundwater p&t system was ceased. In August 2001, hydrogen releasing compounds were injected into the groundwater in order to further reduce contamination. The groundwater p&t system was permanently shutdown and dismantled in 2002. Groundwater monitoring is on-going every fifth quarter. This site has been identified as requiring further investigation for potential soil vapor intrusion. The consultant for Golub (MEA Inc.)collected soil vapor sub-slab, ambient air, and indoor air samples in March 2007. The results were received in June 2007 and additional investigation is warranted. Golub gave the property to the Town of Rotterdam in April 2005, but has agreed to complete the SVI evaluation as part of their voluntary cleanup agreement."

I recall the supervisor who made the 'deal' to take this white elephant off of Golub's hands was John Paulino who promised to be a full time supervisor and then became BS Stratton's right hand money man. |

Sal, it was the John P administration that opted to hire GAR to do the reval, Steve T just inherited the results of that agreement. |

Tommasone didn't make the deal with the golubs....Paolino did. And I'm sure you knew that! Just like I'm also sure you knew that it was Paolino who signed his name to the reval. |

While driving past the plaza this morning I think I noticed that the Rotterdam Windmill is now sporting a broken blade? (A casuality of the recent high winds, perhaps?) How appropriate that our town symbol is beginning to mimic the eyesore it sits in front of. |
